Squatigaleus was erected by Cappetta (1989) for small (1.5 mm class) triakid teeth from the Late Cretaceous of Morocco; subsequent reports extended the range to Syria and Texas. Published reports include:

  • S. vianeyi CAPPETTA 1989 (genotype) - Campanian, Morocco
  • S. atlasi CAPPETTA 1989 - Early Maastrichtian Morocco and Egypt (Cappetta 1991)
  • S. grandjeani CAPPETTA 1991 - Early Maastrichtian, Egypt
  • S. carinatus CAPPETTA 1991 - Early Maastrichtian , Egypt
  • S. sulphurensis CASE & CAPPETTA 1997 - Late Maastrichtian , Texas
  • Squatigaleus sp Bardet et al (2000) - Early Maastrichtian, Syria

In describing the Texas specimens (n=2), the author's noted the short cusp, high shoulders, strong but abbreviated labial folds, apically incomplete cutting-edge, high root, deep nutrient groove and margino-lateral foramina. They noted that the root was higher and labial folds abbreviated when compared with the Moroccan material.
