Serrate Cosmopolitodus hastalis-like teeth are often ascribed to C. escheri (AGASSIZ, 1843). Evidence sugests that C. escheri may be restricted to the Eastern Atlantic and these Bakersfield teeth might better be compared with the undescribed Peruvian teeth represented in the Sacaco dentition (Upper Pisco Formation, c 5myBP).
